Last week I joined several vendors for a styled shoot there, and the venue earned every bit of its name. You step in and rays of sun cut through the trees and shrubbery from every angle. That gave me the chance to use my favorite tool for wedding films: hard lighting.

Direct sun gets a bad reputation in wedding video. Most shooters run from it. I run toward it, because hard light gives you contrast that soft, flat light can't, and contrast is what makes a frame feel cinematic instead of ordinary. With leaves surrounding us on every side, I also brought out my Soviet lens, which does its best work against busy backgrounds. You can see it in the shot below.

Those bubbly bokeh balls swirling behind the subject come straight from that vintage glass. No filter, no effect in post. The swirl pulls your eye to the couple and turns the background into something closer to a painting, which is exactly the feeling I want in a wedding film.
